Pakistan PM: Empowering Through Education on World Braille Day

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s dedication to empowering individuals through accessible education, particularly for visually impaired students. Marking World Braille Day on January 4, he highlighted initiatives including equipping schools with Braille books, enhancing teacher training, and establishing specialized centers to foster inclusivity.

Focus on Accessibility: Empowering Through Education

“Braille is more than a tool—it’s a gateway to independence and equality,” said the Prime Minister. He emphasized the government’s resolve to create enablers that ensure every citizen, regardless of ability, can thrive.

Breaking Barriers: Education for All

The PM called on individuals and institutions to champion inclusivity, urging collective efforts to build a society that measures progress through accessibility. “World Braille Day is a reminder that true progress is measured by how open and equitable our society is and a day for the reinforcement of our pledge to build a Pakistan where every citizen has the platform and opportunities to thrive, and I urge every individual and institution to play their part in promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all,” he added.

Government Initiatives for Visually Impaired Education

In 2021, the government of Pakistan approved a project worth Rs40.3 million to establish a modern Braille printing press in Peshawar to increase literacy rates among visually impaired individuals and enable poets and writers to produce creative and research works in Braille.

Additionally, the Ministry of Human Rights is providing educational opportunities to children with disabilities through special needs schools that offer education via Braille and modern assistive gadgets.
