Ignoring the Nefarious Nature of the Taliban

The British Special Representative for Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, recently posted on social media addressing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. His remarks expressed concern over civilian casualties, including the purported strikes in the Kunar province, referenced UNAMA reports and called for deescalation and dialogue.

Such statements, while framed as neutral appeals for peace, represent a one-sided perspective that conveniently ignores the nefarious and hypocritic nature of the Taliban regime.

Responding to the social media post, FO spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said that the remarks were “devoid of a deeper understanding” of the situation along the border. “Such unwarranted remarks, without linking them to the root cause of terrorism, do not offer a balanced and objective perspective,” he added.

Pakistan exercised maximum restraint by agreeing to a temporary ceasefire in March 2026 during Eid-ul-Fitr. However, following the ceasefire Afghan forces backed by the Taliban launched unprovoked attacks across the border. Since late March, these cross-border assaults largely attributed to Taliban supported Indian proxies operating from Afghan soil, have resulted in the martyrdom of 52 Pakistani civilians and injuries to 84 others.

Pakistan has repeatedly highlighted how Afghan territory continues to serve as a safe haven for terrorist groups, particularly Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and affiliated networks with external backing. Despite clear evidence and repeated calls for action, the Taliban has failed to curb these elements in violation of earlier commitments including those under the Doha Agreement.

Afghan claims of large-scale civilian casualties from Pakistani responses lack evidential credibility. Pakistan’s operations are intelligence-driven responses targeting Taliban hideouts and terrorist support infrastructure, not indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

The perspective maintained by certain international quarters, including the British envoy’s remarks, fails to address the root cause which is the Taliban’s continued policy of harboring proxies and providing safe havens along with supporting anti-Pakistan militant groups.

International actors while advocating for peace and stability, often turn a blind eye to the fact that the Taliban are the ones dismantling peace in Pakistan for years by supporting proxies under the dangerous Indo-Afghan nexus  with India providing the external backing that fuels instability along Pakistan’s western border.
