Another deadliest attack has claimed the life of a prominent scholar. The martyrdom of Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris Trangzai in a well-planned ambush in Utmanzai, Charsadda, has deeply saddened religious and political circles across Pakistan.
The senior cleric and former member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was heading to deliver his routine Dars-e-Hadith at Jamia Darul Uloom Utmanzai when gunmen attacked his vehicle at 7:30 AM on Tuesday morning. He was martyred on the spot along with injuries to his companions.
Maulana Idris was no ordinary cleric. A distinguished teacher of Sahih Bukhari and Tirmidhi for decades with thousands of students. He had recently delivered a Friday sermon strongly endorsing the state’s policies and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s efforts for regional peace and stability.
This public support triggered immediate backlash. Propaganda outlets like Al mersaad, influenced by Afghan intelligence and aligned with Afghan Taliban narratives, launched a vicious campaign in Pashto. They labeled the Maulana a “state agent” and issued direct death threats. What happened was indeed a pre-planned attack as the hypocrite Khawarijis attempt to assassinate the Mullah stemmed from their rage at hearing him support the Army Chief’s efforts for peace and stability.
Afghan Taliban and their proxies, including terrorist groups like TTP enjoying safe havens in Afghanistan continue to destabilize Pakistan. They provide sanctuaries to terrorists who then strike inside the country. Only recently, another respected religious scholar Hafiz Maulana Abdul Salam Arif was assassinated in a similar targeted killing, showing a systematic campaign against pro-Pakistan voices in the religious community.
Similarly, when Pakistan exercised maximum restraint by agreeing to a temporary ceasefire in March 2026 during Eid-ul-Fitr to create space for dialogue and reduce hostilities. However, Afghan Taliban did not hesitate to violate the ceasefire and carried out cross-border attacks which have resulted in the martyrdom of 52 Pakistani civilians and injuries to 84 others.
The blood of Maulana Idris Trangzai once again exposes the reality of safe havens in Afghanistan and the duplicity of those claiming to desire peace while exporting terrorism. Pakistan must respond firmly to protect its scholars, secure its borders and dismantle these cross-border terror networks.
