Is America Heading Towards WW3?

Trump became the third US president

Dr. Bilal Zubair the Director of Research at the Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) shared his viewpoints, noting that the global landscape is currently defined by a fragile temporary ceasefire in the U.S.-Iran war, making President Trump’s visit to Beijing a pivotal moment for international security.

While official U.S. policy remains ostensibly unchanged, a noticeable shift in tone regarding Taiwan has alarmed Beijing President Xi has been clear that any deviation in the Taiwan Strait is a “red line” that could trigger a direct conflict.

The economic stakes of this mission are equally high. Following a period of reciprocal tariffs exceeding 100%, Trump is seeking trade relaxations to present a “winning position” to his domestic audience. However, despite the presence of over a dozen high-profile CEOs, significant breakthroughs have been difficult to secure.

The manufacturing reality where 90% of Apple’s production and major Tesla operations are based in China makes decoupling nearly impossible. Furthermore, tech leaders like Nvidia are pressing for the ability to export H200 chips, which are vital for the future of AI and quantum computing.

The gaps in the “wish list” are evident for instance, while the U.S. hoped for an order of 500 Boeing aircraft, China has only committed to 200, causing Boeing’s shares to fall by 4%. Similarly, while Trump is desperate to secure more imports of soybeans and beef to satisfy his “MAGA base,” Beijing has yet to make firm promises.

Strategically, the focus has shifted toward energy security and the Strait of Hormuz. Recognizing China’s reliance on Iranian crude oil, Trump has agreed that the oil trade between Iran and China will continue as it did before the war, a major concession aimed at preventing further militarization of the Strait.

Ultimately, this summit is being driven by intense domestic pressures. With the American public increasingly viewing the Iran conflict as “Israel’s war” and Trump’s popularity dipping ahead of the mid-term elections, the President is desperate for trade revenue to offset rising oil prices. While the final declaration will reveal the full extent of any agreements, the current priorities reflect a world teetering between economic cooperation and the shadow of a much larger conflict.
