The six-nation conference on illegal migration held in Warsaw marked an important moment for Pakistan as the European states acknowledged the country’s effort to reduce irregular migration. Pakistan showed a 47% reduction in illegal migration to Europe, which was achieved through arresting over 1,700 human smugglers via nationwide crackdowns on the routes used by transnational networks. This marks a shift of perception towards Pakistan on the international level not as problem source, but rather as the active and responsible partner.
During the conference Pakistan highlighted deep links between illegal migration, transnational crimes and terrorism. The country emphasized its role in migration governance as well as global security by clamping down on internal controls and disruption of trafficking channels. Pakistan once again stated that the issues of migration cannot be solved unilaterally, but rather it is a collective responsibility of origin, transit and destination countries. The call to have improved coordination, intelligence sharing as well as the use of institutional mechanisms reflect the long term, cooperative approach by Pakistan.
The European states (Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland) recognized Pakistan as a front-line state, agreeing to expand legal labour pathways and capacity building for Pakistan via EU support. This aligns with the EU-Pakistan Talent Partnership Roadmap and Readmission Agreement (EURA), promoting safe migration while countering smuggling.
Pakistan stressed another domestic agenda that is the need to rid its territory of illegal immigration practices with recent attempts aimed at undocumented Afghan citizens in the country. All in all, the role of Pakistan in the conference demonstrated her progressive role as a credible, cooperative and security-conscious stakeholder in the migration pattern of the globe.
