Pakistan’s diplomacy meets Houthi defiance and Israeli deadlock

Houthi attacks and the Mecca Pact

Riyadh: The coalition says it intercepted two Houthi ballistic missiles fired at Riyadh on 27 October. AP reports that more missiles were intercepted over the Eastern Region. Late on Tuesday, Saudi civil defence issued alerts for the Jeddah and Yanbu areas.

Sanaa: Mohammed Ali al-Houthi said on Telegram that Egypt’s decision meant Cairo would “declare war against the Republic of Yemen”. He went further, calling the Mecca pact “a clear and blatant act of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Cairo: Egypt’s parliament has authorised support to defend the Kingdom. As of AFP’s report, however, no formal Saudi request or deployment had been announced.

Islamabad and Ankara: AFP notes that neither capital has announced strikes on the Houthis since the group stepped up its attacks this month. Pakistan’s focus so far has been de-escalation and diplomacy rather than retaliation.

Gulf and the Mecca Pact

Al-Houthi’s outburst came in reaction to Monday’s Tehran visit by Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. According to AFP, the delegation met Rezaei and President Pezeshkian. Al-Houthi insisted the group is “not afraid of any alliance that may be formed”.

Reuters lists further Houthi claims that Saudi Arabia has not confirmed. These include attacks at Najran, Khamis Mushait and Abha, and a claim that Saudi-backed forces were “repelled” near Bab el-Mandeb.

Israel votes, with no winner yet

Exit polls give no bloc the 61 seats needed for a majority. Kan 11 and Channel 13 have Netanyahu’s bloc and the opposition tied at 51 each, while Channel 12 puts it at 52 to 49. Likud is projected to be the largest party with 27 seats, Eisenkot’s Yashar has 21 to 22, and the Joint List and Ra’am together have about 18 to 19.

Eisenkot claimed victory and the first right to form a government. AP’s analysis is that his easiest route runs through the Arab-led parties, a path that could prove politically difficult. At 04:27 Israel time, only about 28 percent of the vote had been counted, leaning towards Netanyahu, so the outcome remains unsettled.

Pakistan

On Kashmir Black Day, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan “reaffirms its unwavering political, moral, and diplomatic support for the people of IIOJK”. He also addressed the Foreign Office’s solidarity walk at D-Chowk, while ISPR released a solidarity song.

Missiles, drones and space

Russia and Ukraine: Overnight from 26 to 27 October, Russia struck Kyiv with Iskander-M and S-400 missiles launched from Bryansk, along with 280 drones, 69 of them jet-powered. Ukraine’s Air Force says it shot down two ballistic missiles and 255 drones.

Zelenskyy says 16 ballistic missiles were fired in all. He called the hit on Kyiv’s South Bridge “a serious escalation in Russia’s operation against our logistics”, and blamed “artificial and prolonged delays” in Patriot and NASAMS deliveries. Russia’s Defence Ministry says it hit “an industrial enterprise producing and storing long- and medium-range unmanned aerial vehicles”.

India: Reported Bay of Bengal trial windows open tomorrow, running 29 to 30 October, then 2 to 3, 5 and 6 November, over a danger area about 590 km long. No system has been named and DRDO has issued no statement, so this is a window, not a confirmed test.

Great-power strategic stability

Experts quoted by Axios expect little from the “denuclearization” summit with Putin and Xi that Trump has floated. “The odds on that are extremely low,” said Jon Wolfsthal. FDD’s Andrea Stricker added: “It’s not even clear that Russia and the United States really seek a new agreement.” The White House did not comment.
