In a clear endorsement of Islamabad’s long-standing position, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Washington shares Pakistan’s concerns over terrorist attacks originating from Afghan territory, adding that the United States does not want Pakistan to be targeted.
Responding to a question at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Summit in Atlanta, Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s concerns regarding terrorist attacks and Islamabad’s position that the Afghan Taliban had not done enough to constrain terrorist elements operating from its territory.
“Pakistan is concerned about terrorist attacks that are being sponsored from the territory of Afghanistan. They feel as if the Taliban has not done enough to constrain [these elements],” Rubio said.
He further affirmed Washington’s understanding of Pakistan’s concerns, stating, “We share Pakistan’s concerns.” He also made the US position on Pakistan unmistakable, saying, “We don’t want Pakistan to be targeted.”
Rubio’s remarks are a vindication of what Pakistan has been telling the world for years. Islamabad has consistently raised the issue at the highest levels, and during Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s meeting with Rubio in Washington in May, Pakistan conveyed its concerns over the use of Afghan soil by terrorist groups and pressed for stronger counter-terrorism cooperation (MOFA). Rubio has also stressed that terrorism is a shared concern even while engaging other regional partners (Business Today), making it clear that Pakistan’s security is not a side issue for Washington.
The statement also exposes the hollowness of the Taliban’s denials. The Taliban insist they allow no group to use Afghan soil against other countries, yet UN sanctions monitors have reported that the TTP keeps thousands of fighters inside Afghanistan (Amu TV). When the world’s leading power publicly acknowledges the threat, those who dismiss Pakistan’s warnings as rhetoric are left with no ground to stand on.
Rubio’s remarks reflect Washington’s recognition of Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns regarding cross-border terrorism and underscore the US position against Pakistan being targeted by terrorist attacks. The message to Kabul is unambiguous: the burden of reining in terrorist sanctuaries lies with the Taliban, and the international community is no longer willing to look away.
