Bangladesh Inaugurates the Country’s Largest Refugee Housing Scheme

Project inaugurated to house climate refugees

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the country’s largest rehabilitation project in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The landmark called ‘Khurushkul Ashrayan Prokalpa’ will be home to 4000 families. Additionally, it lies on the outskirts of the southeastern beach town of Cox’s Bazar.

Furthermore, due to the pandemic, the PM completed the formalities via video conferencing from her official residence on Thursday morning. Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed spoke on the occasion, while Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lieutenant General Md Mahfuzur Rahman and senior officials of the Prime Minister’s Office were present.

Also, the guests were shown a video documentary. Local parliament members, senior army officials including General officer commanding (GOC) of the area and officials of the administration, and the project were present in Cox’s Bazar.

More about the project

The buildings have ramps, solar panels, safe drinking water, electricity, sanitation, waste management, drainage, cylinder gas, and burners. Interestingly, military troops constructed 139 five-storied buildings on 253.59 acres of land costing Tk1800.39 crore.

In addition to this, the project director said in the statement that the project has four zones – residential, tourism, dried fish processing zone. “The size of the structures and the number of beneficiaries make the Khurushkul scheme the country’s largest rehabilitation project.” Said, officials.

In the past, Bangladesh has struggled with natural disasters. The deadly 1991 cyclone left many homeless. Eventually, they languished in crammed shanties in the airport area of Cox’s Bazar in the subsequent decades.
