An Afghan student was detained in Pune for overstaying his visa. The arrest highlights challenges faced by Afghan nationals in India.

Indian authorities have reported the arrest of an Afghan student in Pune for staying beyond the validity of his visa. This marks the first such incident involving Afghan students in the city, raising concerns for others in similar situations.

The 29-year-old Afghan citizen was detained by local police in the Hinjawadi area of Pune on Thursday, April 10. Officials stated that his visa expired in December 2022, and his academic program in Uttar Pradesh had already concluded.

According to The Times of India, after completing his studies, the student lived in Delhi for nearly two years before relocating to Pune in February 2024. During the arrest, the police also seized a United Nations Refugee Card from the individual.

A formal case has been filed against the Afghan student under India’s “Foreigners Act.” Authorities have confirmed that legal action is being pursued, with the case still under investigation.

Pune has long been considered a major educational center for Afghan students in India. Since the fall of the previous Afghanistan government and the rise of the Taliban, many Afghan students in India have faced significant challenges regarding their residency status.

This recent arrest is the first documented case of legal action being taken against Afghan students for overstaying their visas in India. There are concerns that more such incidents could follow, further complicating the situation for Afghan students in India, particularly those living in Pune.

The arrest has sparked widespread concern regarding the future of Afghan students in India, especially in cities like Pune, where many continue their education despite residency issues. With legal measures tightening, these students may face increasing difficulties, which could have serious implications for their academic and personal futures.

The arrest of the Afghan student highlights an urgent issue affecting a significant number of Afghan nationals in India. Many students are facing residency challenges due to the complex legal framework and the political situation in Afghanistan.

It is crucial for both Indian authorities and international organizations to find solutions that address the educational and residency concerns of Afghan students in India. Increased support, clearer legal guidelines, and humanitarian considerations are needed to ensure the safety and well-being of these students.
