Kathmandu Metropolis Rescues 74 Children in Less Than a Year

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has reported the rescue of 74 children over the past 11 months, from mid-April 2024 to mid-March 2025.

According to Shanta Pahadi, a child welfare officer at the metropolis, the children rescued include 41 boys and 33 girls.

Among the rescued children, 38 have been placed in child protection homes, while 34 have been reunited with their families.

Following these rescues, seven cases have been brought forward for judicial processing, with charges involving four cases of sexual assault, two of child sexual abuse, and one involving physical assault and forced labour.

The metropolis revealed that in the two most recent cases, its psychosocial reports, along with joint monitoring findings, were treated as formal complaints, leading to legal action in courts.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City officials said they monitor the condition of the children even after the rescue while pursuing legal measures against their abusers.

This initiative is part of the city’s broader efforts to protect vulnerable children, ensuring they receive adequate care and justice. Officials emphasized the importance of community involvement in identifying and reporting cases of child abuse, allowing authorities to intervene promptly.

The metropolitan government has also strengthened cooperation with law enforcement agencies, social organizations, and child welfare institutions to prevent future incidents and provide long-term rehabilitation for affected children.

Authorities have called for stricter enforcement of child protection laws to deter abuse and enhance legal actions against perpetrators, reinforcing their commitment to a safer environment for children.
